Siemens has signed contracts worth €8 billion for high-efficiency natural gas-fired power plants and wind power installations that will boost Egypt’s power generation capacity by more than 50 percent compared to the currently installed base. The projects will add an additional 16.4 gigawatts (GW) to Egypt’s national grid to support the country’s rapid economic development and meet its growing population’s demand for power.
The signing ceremony was witnessed today in Berlin, Germany by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel. The orders expand on the memorandums of understanding announced at the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC) held in Sharm El Sheik in March 2015.
“With these unprecedented contracts, Siemens and its partners are supporting Egypt’s economic development by using highly efficient natural gas and renewable technologies to create an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy mix for the country’s future,” said Joe Kaeser, President and CEO of Siemens AG. “The Egyptian people can count on Siemens. Together with local Egyptian partners Elsewedy Electric and Orascom Construction, Siemens will supply on a turnkey basis three natural gas-fired combined cycle power plants, each with a capacity of 4.8GW, for a total combined capacity of 14.4GW. Each of the three power plants –- Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital – will be powered by eight Siemens H-Class gas turbines, selected for their high output and record-breaking efficiency.
The plants will add power to the grid in stages. Plans call for an initial 4.4GW to go online before summer 2017 and the full 14.4GW to become available 38 months after the financing has closed and advance payments have been received. Once completed, the three power plants will be the largest in the world.
Siemens will also deliver up to 12 wind farms in the Gulf of Suez and West Nile areas, comprising around 600 wind turbines and an installed capacity of 2GW. The company will build a rotor blade manufacturing facility in Egypt’s Ain Soukhna region, which will provide training and employment for up to 1,000 people. The facility is scheduled to go into operation in the second half of 2017.
Siemens’ Financial Services Division (SFS) has structured a financing package for Siemens’ role in the contracts, including a tailored guarantee concept. The envisaged loan facilities, supported to a large extent by Export Credit Agency coverage in Germany and Denmark, will be provided by international and regional banks.
Siemens has been doing business in Egypt since 1859 and has maintained a continuous presence in the country since opening its first office in Cairo in 1901. Emerson Process Management, a global business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), has won an order from NTPC Limited to provide automation technologies and expertise for two new 800-megawatt supercritical generating units at the Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station in the Sundergarh District, Odisha, India.
The new units will help meet the energy needs of the region’s growing population. Unit 1 commissioning is expected in December 2017, with Unit 2 to follow three months later.
“Supercritical technologies boost the efficiency of coal-based electricity generation while reducing carbon and other emissions, but the high temperatures and pressures involved make them more challenging to control,” explained Dr. Amit Paithankar, managing director, Emerson Process Management, India. “Our automation specialists have proven expertise and our Ovation™ control system is in more than 300 of these complex units worldwide. We welcome this opportunity to apply that experience to these important national assets.”
Emerson project teams will engineer, install and commission Ovation systems to monitor and control each unit’s supercritical boiler and critical balance-of-plant processes and equipment. Emerson will also provide its Rosemount® Analytical online steam water analysis system and continuous emissions monitoring system, Rosemount pressure and level transmitters, and additional instrumentation.
Emerson previously worked with NTPC Limited, which is India’s largest power utility, to automate units at the Sipat, Simhadri, and Tanda power stations and is currently carrying out projects at several other sites.

OMRON Corporation announced on May 7 that it is expanding product lineups of slim and compact control devices altogether and starting to provide solutions which contribute to downsizing manufacturing equipment and control panels and to bringing total costs down. To be more precise, OMRON is releasing DIN-rail-mountable uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) S8BA, which are the smallest in their class, and short-bodied pushbutton switches A22N in addition to the slim industrial relays G2RV and G3RV which are already available for sale. Besides Zuken of the E3 series and EPLAN Software & Service of EPLAN, OMRON is establishing a relationship of cooperation with Wacom Co. in the ECAD dio field for the electrical control CAD, the system design support tool for control panels and the like.

The easy DIN-rail mountable, DC-DC type UPS is ideal countermeasure for momentary voltage drops and power failures of industrial computers (IPCs) and controllers. They secure full functional reliability of systems by backing up the supply of 24 VDC power source for a guaranteed period of time. These pushbutton switches are for control panels, switchboards and operation panels on industrial equipment. The body is shortened by 30% compared with our previous product. The short body with multiple contacts contributes to compact and slim control panels. These switches have the lock mechanism; just slide the lever to mount the operation part and perform two actions to unlock the part with the safety design. The products are suitable for global use with a wide variety to choose from such as being compatible with panel-hole diameters of 22, 25, or 30 mm, shapes and colors of the buttons, LED lighting voltages and safety standards.

Slim I/O Relays G2RV Series / Solid-state Relays G3RV Series
Slim I/O Relays G2RV and G3RV have a slim shape of 6.2 mm width and the thickness is reduced by 70% compared with our previous product, which give flexibility in designing control panels. The maximum switching current of contacts is 6 A for the general purpose relays and 3 A for the solid-state relays. Relays with latching levers that permit easy operation checks, relays for microload switching with gold-plating contacts, and solid-state relays (SSR) with output to achieve highly frequent switching at high speed are available to deal with a wide range of applications at manufacturers. The use of push-in terminals for connection enables the time required for wiring to be reduced by 25 seconds max per terminal compared with conventional screw terminals (or round terminals). The G2RV and G3RV have been sold globally, mainly in Europe, more than four million units since the 2006 fiscal year.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won orders from Hitachi Zosen Inova, the Swiss-based waste-to-energy engineering, procurement and construction contractor, to supply a complete electrical and control solution for the new Severnside Energy Recovery Centre in England and a waste-to-energy plant in Poznan, Poland.
The waste-to-energy industry, where electricity and heat are derived from household and commercial waste, is a growing market. On the one hand, rising populations and urbanization are leading to more waste, while on the other landfill options are diminishing. Between 1990 and 2010, worldwide municipal solid waste volume increased from 700 million tons to 1.3 billion tons and is set to reach 2.2 billion tons by 2025. Using the waste-to-energy process, one ton of municipal solid waste could supply up to 800 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity.

The West London Waste Authority is building the Severnside facility as it seeks to shift waste from being put into landfills. Poznan’s project is part of a broader effort by cities in the country to comply with new national and European environmental standards on waste disposal.
The Severnside facility will treat up to 400,000 metric tons of municipal solid waste a year, with an installed electrical capacity of 37 megawatts (MW), enough to power 50,000 UK homes. The Poznan plant has a capacity of 18 MW derived from 210,000 metric tons of waste that would otherwise be buried in landfills. Both plants are expected to start operation in 2016.
